Data management

Tabular information available to the CSCF is managed by the relational system of database management ORACLE and thus distributed in various inter-connected thematic files.  Information relating to the observations is gathered in a file so called principal (CAPT) connected by numeric or alphanumeric digital codes, with secondary decoding files. With the latter belong the systematic files (ORDERS, FAMILIES, and SPECIES), those identifying the recognised habitats (TYPOLOGY), the sampling procedures (METHODS), the communes (COMMUNES) or observers (LEG) for example.

The layers of spatial information (digital field model, biogeographic areas, federal inventories, lakes and rivers...) are managed by the system ArcGIS (ESRI).  The link which unites them with the tabular information is ensured by the geographical coordinates associated with the observations of the principal database files.

Aims

In accordance with its statutes and with its code of ethics, the CSCF commits

  • to provide to the institutions which finance it, the information which they wish on the distribution of rare or threatened species, on the value of certain biotopes or the populations of particular environments for example.
  • to ensure similar services for any other institution (public or private) committed in specific and concrete projects on the protection of biotopes or species.
  • to provide the desired information by the various Swiss or foreign specialists about taxa that they have already processed. A similar service is ensured for its permanent collaborators.
  • to help, within its means, any specialist interested by its activities, in the production of catalogues or "Atlases of distribution "of taxa that has not yet been described or deserve revision
  • to provide to the voluntary naturalists interested by its work the technical assistance essential to accentuate their field observations. This technical assistance will be provided to all its permanent collaborators as well as to all those which will deliver new faunal data to the CSCF.

All of the offered services in this section were developed to answer these commitments.
